Blocked drains are one the most common task of plumbers. Before calling professionals for help, you might do the unclogging using these hacks:
Use bent wire hanger.
This is a classic, time-tested method to unclog the sink or any drainage is by pulling the materials that are choking your pipes. Take a wire coat hanger and straighten it. Bend one end of a hook. Push it into the drain and start fishing for hair, food debris and other things that clog your sink or another drainage.
Sometimes pouring a kettle of boiling water can save you the effort and money for hiring a plumber. Pour it two to three times and let the boiling water work its way inside the pipe.
Dish detergent solution.
For a clogged toilet bowl, pour 1/4 cup dish detergent in the bowl and let it sit for a few minutes. The detergent is an effective lubricant that can loosen greasy residue. Then pour a kettleful of boiling water. Use a plunger. If plunging does not work, use rubber gloves to clear the clog.
Salt and baking soda.
Combine 1/2 cup table salt and 1/2 cup baking soda and pour it into the clogged drain for 10-20 minutes. Flush it with boiling water. This mixture will result in a chemical reaction that can dissolve some clogs.
Baking soda and vinegar mixture.
If the boiling water solution does not work, mix 1/3 cup baking soda and 1/3 cup vinegar. Pour it immediately into the drain while it is still fizzing. Let it seep in the clog for at least an hour or even overnight. Then, flush with hot water. This method is great for clearing your pipe of the build up of gunk, grime and hair.
Caustic soda for drastic measures.
Using rubber gloves and goggles, pour add 3 cups of caustic soda to a 3/4 gallon cold water in a bucket and stir it. The mixture will immediately bubble and heat up. Pour it into the drain at once and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. Flush the drain with boiling water. Just be careful in handling the mixture as this may cause chemical burning.
